Last December, I timidly admitted that there was a huge hole in my Nerd credit.
I grew up by drawing cartoons, taken after high school and I have always been fascinated by hand drawn by hand …
But I had Never seen a single second of any Ghibli studio cartoon!
Studio Ghibli is the Japanese Disney equivalent, with Hayao Miyazaki as a Japanese Walt: the studio has won several Academy prizes for their beautifully drawn animated films, and Miyazaki has reached legendary status to have Made these films in the past 40 years.
Fortunately, the incredible community on the sons gave me hundreds of comments of support and helped me to decide with which film I should start!
Since he made this announcement, I have looked at Every 20+ Ghibli studio movies,, I fell in love with JapanAnd became endlessly fascinated by Hayao Miyazaki.
(My favorites are animated, my neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s delivery service, whispering of the heart and the wind starts.).
After watching each film, I went to watch documentaries on Miyazaki and Ghibli studio because I needed to know more.
Thanks to these documentaries, I had a fascinating look at the creative style and the experiences of Miyazaki to make these films alongside his colleagues.
The current joke was that Miyazaki is “the endless man” and does not seem to retire.
There was something that marked me in each documentary:
In The kingdom of dreams and madness, At one point, all the employees of Studio Ghibli have risen and have evolved through a series of mobility and celisthenia exercises, including Miyazaki.
Later in the doc, I observed Miyazaki demonstrating a very deep squat With a perfect shape and no help. How many people do you know in the 1970s at the mid-year of the 70s who can perform a deep unaccomposed squat!?
In Endless man: Hayao Miyazaki, Miyazaki is filmed several times by cutting wood With an ax in the backyard of his studio.
And in Hayao Miyazaki and the HeronMiya-San (sound nickname), now in the 80s, is still cutting wood, walking in the woods, climbing on fallen trees, doing your office exercises and working hard on the film which would culminate the work of his life.
(Yes, I know. Miyazaki also has a cigarette in his mouth for almost every minute of each documentary! He is lucky that he has not yet developed lung cancer, and I remember that he is Not the perfect image of health!).
I raise this because I think it shows a different side of exercise from what we could normally consider.
Training for your old person’s body
Watch this Hayao Miyazaki doc stay active and keep your brain live in the 80s …
I was told that Elizabeth post incredible (@Thisgirllift on Instagram):
As we get older, it is easier for us to move less, which gives us less energy and makes it more difficult to find momentum and mobility to continue to move. This could prevent us from spending time with our family or friends because we cannot bring together energy.
Teddy Roosevelt said one day: “Rather run the risk of wearing rusting.”
In other words: use it or lose it, bub.
It is not a section for me to imagine Miyazaki’s ability to be an “endless man” is not only due to good genetics (and a chance), but also because he actively has Choose to wear out rather than rusting.
By reflecting on the reason why he chose to push himself to finish another animated film in his 8th decade on this planet, he simply replied that it was all that he knew how to do: “I prefer to die from Doing that rather than dying by doing nothing. “
The physical form is more than weight loss
At Nerd Fitness, we encourage all the rebels to think of their “big why”.
Why take the trouble to exercise and build new habits and push you to improve your life when the sofa is bearing?
What is the point of exercising you and learning to deal with discomfort when retirement in comfort is easier and so attractive?
A really strong “big why” can help us stay on the target, especially when life turns into a dumpster fire or want to abandon.
For Miyazaki, he decided that “getting out what’s going on in me” is a good use of his time. He found peace and fulfillment by creating things rather than consuming them, which means that he must take care of his body enough to stay alive long enough to do these things!
For my gramma (which I visited the hospital last month), his goal is to support his community and help those around him. Stay active allowed him to do this well in his 90s!
If you have trouble finding a reason why do something …
You can do worse than “training for my old person’s body”. This is the only body you get, and the only life you get, so today is a day as good as anything to start treating your body with a little more respect.
He doesn’t need to be dramatic either. We can start simple:
- We can make a short daily walk.
- We can stand up throughout the day and do mobility work like squats and arm swings.
- We can Start strength training To build solid bones and avoid needing help as long as possible.
It is up to us to keep our body active, and wear is better than rusting for lack of use.
As a chaotic creator who spends a lot of time in my own head, Hayao Miyazaki gave me a lot to think:
I hope that when I am in the 80s, I always write this newsletter and I help people, cut wood and make walks and spend time with expensive beings.
I know that I cannot control what is going on and the accidents occur and a large part of life is outside my control, but I will do my best to give me the best chance to continue to create and to Underwater than rusting!
I will leave you with the last quote from Curmudgeonly de Miyazaki who closes the documentary Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron:
“Stop whining and move.”
Now, if you apologize, it’s time for me to train for my old man!

PS: The original Japanese title for The boy and the heron East How do you live?. This is a much more interesting (and appropriate) title of the film; It is really the encapsulation of the work of his life, those who influenced her and his deepest thoughts on the meaning of life.
